Reiki

What is Reiki?

Reiki is a safe and gentle therapy which helps to put the body into a state of healing and repair. It can be carried out on a couch, in a chair and even as a distant treatment.

Who can Reiki benefit?

Reiki can benefit those suffering from stress and anxiety, pain, and insomnia. It can help alleviate the symptoms associated with chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Reiki can help shift or remove stagnant blockages which prevent mental and spiritual growth.

The origins of Reiki

Reiki is a safe, gentle, non-intrusive energy healing modality from Japan. It originated in the late 1800s by the Japanese Buddhist monk Dr Mikao Usui. Reiki uses universal life force energy channelled through a practitioners hands to help move stagnant energy and release blockages, resulting in physical, emotional, mental and spiritual wellbeing and balance.

What happens in a Reiki treatment?

A Reiki treatment is carried out in a calm environment, either lying down on a couch or sitting in a chair, fully clothed with the practitioner placing their hands either above or on the body. It is a nurturing, grounding therapy encouraging emotional release. I use a natural and intuitive approach to create balance and clarity.

The benefits of Reiki

  • It can create a deep relaxed state, helping the body to release tension and stress

  • Aid sleep

  • Reduce blood pressure

  • Help relieve pain

  • Help cope with illness and the side effects of medication

  • Enable spiritual and mental healing and growth

Reiki is one of the most scientifically researched complementary therapies. As a registered nurse I base my practice upon robust research findings. This ensures that patients in my care receive the best possible treatments available at that given time within the resources available. My work ethic remains the same for the holistic treatments I give. The evidence underpinning Reiki is irrefutable, and aligns with my values and beliefs in health.

Physiologically, Reiki gently triggers the parasympathetic nervous system into action (rest and digest). The stress hormones adrenaline and cortisol are reduced and heart rate and blood pressure normalise. As homeostasis returns to a state of equilibrium so does the hormones associated with digestion, sleep, fertility, regulation of emotions (amongst others).

The immune system is thereby relieved of the pressure it is under. This alone can be the shift that is needed to help someone move in the direction of healing.

Reiki is a multifaceted therapy with spiritual undertones, and can do no harm.
