Indian Head Massage

What is Indian Head Massage?

An Indian Head Massage is carried out in a chair. It encompasses massage to the upper back, shoulders, neck, head and face.

How can an Indian Head Massage benefit me?

It can help with stress, anxiety, migraines, muscle tension, insomnia, improve the condition of the hair and brighten the face.

The origins of Indian Head Massage

Indian Head massage is a powerful and invigorating treatment which works on both a physical and emotional level. It is based upon traditional Indian family rituals that have evolved over 4000 years.

In the western world it has developed into a comprehensive therapy that addresses stress, anxiety and the challenges of modern day living. It is carried out sitting in a low back chair or can be done lying down.

What are the benefits of an Indian Head Massage?

  • Helps to relieve muscular tension

  • Helps alleviate feelings of anxiety and depression - improving mental wellness

  • Can help with insomnia

  • Relaxes the muscles in the neck and shoulders which can help relieve tension headaches and help prevent migraines

  • Decreases inflammation in the tissues which can help to relieve pain

  • Improves lymphatic flow to the head and neck which can eliminate toxins and reduce oedema

  • Stimulates the releases of endorphins from the brain, helping to lift the mood and relieve emotional stress

  • Brightens the face, reduces puffiness

  • Improves the condition of the hair

The treatment

The treatment begins with a back massage which warms the muscles, aids relaxation and encourages the removal of toxins.  Lymphatic drainage takes place which helps to reduce any build up of fluid in the area. I use an oil that is suited to your skin type with added essential oils or a pre blended oil.

A shoulder massage helps to stretch the muscles and release tension. Sitting at a desk on a daily basis can result in tension being held in the shoulders and neck. This tension can cause a reduction in blood flow to the head. The nervous system in the area is under more pressure and headaches can occur as a result.

The neck muscles are gently massaged to release tension and improve blood circulation. This also helps to relax the jaw which is a common place for anxiety to manifest.

An invigorating scalp massage follows using friction and ‘shampooing’ techniques. This increases the circulating blood flow, generating warmth and relaxation.  Oils (optional) are applied to the hair which will help to improve its texture and health. I use an organic macadamia oil for the hair which moisturises the scalp, boosts shine, and regulates oil production. Massage to the scalp increases the oxygen supply and nutrients to the hair follicle which can help strengthen hair and encourage hair growth.

I finish with a gentle facial massage with an organic rosehip seed oil. This particular oil is suitable for all skin types and is non greasy. It contains fatty acids and vitamins A, C and E which protect the skin from pollutants in the environment and supports collagen production so skin stays elastic and bright. It also has antibacterial properties. The massage itself aids lymphatic drainage, helps reduce puffiness and brightens the skin.

To end the treatment I balance the higher chakras of the crown, third eye and throat. The Indian Head Massage clears these 3 chakras so it is important they are re-balanced at the end of the treatment.

After care

Following an Indian Head Massage I encourage some time to be taken to re-awaken and allow the therapy to dissipate through the rest of the body. It is a good time to practice stress relieving techniques such as meditation or yoga. It is also important to hydrate with water or herbal teas and to avoid alcohol as this helps to detoxify the body. Avoiding a heavy meal allows the body to use its energy to heal (rather than digest). If possible, I would advise leaving the oils on overnight. This will allow them to penetrate the skin and hair, providing maximum benefit.
